University Police Makes Arrest in Friday Incident

The University Police Department (UPD) has arrested Eric M. Camp, 18, a University of Southern Mississippi student from Gulfport, in conjunction with Friday’s incident at McCarty Hall.

Camp is charged with one count of sexual battery and is being held in the Forrest County Regional Jail. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance early next week and will also be subject to student disciplinary action under the USM Student Code of Conduct.

A Southern Miss student reported the incident to a McCarty Hall resident assistant who informed UPD at approximately 4 p.m. Friday. UPD arrested Camp late Friday.

Students are reminded that in addition to UPD, the Title IX office can be of assistance with incidents of sexual misconduct or assault.

The Title IX coordinator, Dr. Rebecca Malley, is available to offer support or assistance to students with related concerns. She can be reached at 601.266.6804 or rebecca.malley@usm.edu.

Mental health professionals at Student Counseling Services (SCS) can also offer support and assistance. SCS has a weekly support group for sexual assault survivors, and the Shafer Center provides first response and advocacy for students. During regular business hours, students can reach a counselor on-call at 601.606.HELP (4357). University Police can also access a counselor on-call as appropriate.

University Police can be reached at 601.266.4986.
