University officials are currently monitoring Tropical Storm Nate, which is expected to become Hurricane Nate as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. The system has the potential to impact our Gulf Park campus, beginning as early as Saturday.
It is important that we begin preparing for the impacts of this storm system, and we charge you to begin making preparations now in your colleges, units and buildings.
Prior to leaving campus for the weekend, you should do the following:
-Check to make sure your contact information is up to date in the University’s Eagle Alert emergency notification system: https://www.usm.edu/safety/eagle-alert.
-Back up electronic files on portable drives or, for University-owned computers, through Eagle Backup.
-Move valuable items away from windows, cover unmovable items and unplug electronic devices.
-Take valuable personal property with you as you leave campus.
Comply with all preparedness and emergency safety advisories issued by University officials or other local or state agencies, and please continue to closely monitor local media outlets for updated information as the storm approaches. The University will share updates as needed.
All USM emergency messages can be accessed at SouthernMiss.info. Related information may also be communicated through University accounts on Facebook and Twitter, media outlets and emergency notifications at usm.edu.
