Tropical Storm Nate is expected to affect the Hattiesburg area this weekend. Please be advised of the following safety information on-campus residents need to know for this storm. In addition, please be reminded of hurricane preparedness tips and institutional protocols that have previously been distributed by the University; you can access the latest updates at SouthernMiss.info.
Shelter in Place:
In order to avoid hazardous conditions and winds dangerous to pedestrians, students should shelter in place in their residence hall, sorority house or fraternity house rooms no later than 12:00 a.m. Sunday, October 8 and remain until 12:00 p.m. that day. Because of the steady progression of the storm, this time block could change. We recommend that you not exit your building, remaining inside your residence hall, sorority house or fraternity house during this time block, as the storm moves through the area.
University personnel are continuing to monitor the weather throughout the day and through the weekend. Please consider purchasing non-perishable food and beverages for use during the storm. Eagle Dining locations will be closed beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and anticipate reopening Sunday at 5:00 p.m. or when the University issues an “All Clear” announcement, meaning it is safe to exit campus buildings. Basic food items and water will be delivered to residents of each residence hall, sorority house and fraternity house Saturday afternoon for use by residents on Sunday.
Please carry your USM identification/access card with you at all times. If you have not signed up for Eagle Alert, please do so now at https://www.usm.edu/safety/eagle-alert-enrollment-instructions, and monitor SouthernMiss.info for more information related to the storm. RAs and Residence Life Coordinators will remain in place during the storm to assist residents and help distribute food and water.
If you need assistance during the storm, you should contact your RA or Residence Life Coordinator. You may also call the University Police Department at 601.266.4986, 24 hours a day.
Overnight guests are not allowed to visit the residence halls beginning on Saturday. If you were granted permission for an overnight guest for this weekend, please contact your guest and notify the guest that they are not permitted to visit because of the approaching storm. Visitation will resume on Sunday after the University issues an “All Clear” notice, meaning that the campus is safe for students, staff and faculty to be outside buildings.
Again please monitor the weather throughout the weekend. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office or your Residence Life Coordinator.
Remain calm at all times and be safe. SMTTT!
