12.7.17, 1:39 p.m. - Winter Weather Advisory May Affect 9 a.m. Commencement Ceremony, Hattiesburg Operations on Friday

Due to additional accumulation of snow, USM’s Hattiesburg operations will be closed on Friday, Dec. 8. The Commencement ceremonies now scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. will proceed.

Volunteers who were scheduled to assist with Commencement are still needed if they are able to travel to campus safely.

Graduates, if you are unable to travel as a result of the weather, you may opt to participate in the Spring Commencement ceremony.

The University requests that participants and visitors for the 3 p.m. Commencement ceremony arrive no earlier than 1:30 p.m. to allow for traffic from the first ceremony to fully vacate the area around Reed Green Coliseum.

Mississippi Department of Transportation recommends the following when traveling in winter weather conditions:

- Slow down. Should winter weather conditions become present, “black ice” can form.
- Allow more space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
- Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
- Stay alert.
