University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg Campus to Close at Noon Today

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus will close at noon today in anticipation of predicted winter weather. Beginning early this afternoon, up to one-half inch of freezing rain and snow is expected in the area and travel could become hazardous. At this time, the University’s Gulf Coast locations are not expected to be similarly impacted and will maintain normal schedules.
If the anticipated weather situation and hazardous road conditions occur, students, faculty and staff and advised to limit travel to emergency situations beginning in the early afternoon.
If an emergency situation requires travel by vehicle, the Mississippi Department of Transportation recommends the following:
-          Slow down. Should winter weather conditions become present, “black ice” can form.
-          Allow more space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
-          Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
-          Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
-          Stay alert.
