1.16.18, 5:59 a.m. - University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg Campus to Close at Noon Today
The University of Southern Mississippi’s coastal operations at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, and Stennis Space Center in Hancock County will close at 2 p.m. today in anticipation of predicted winter weather. Beginning late this afternoon, up to one-half inch of freezing rain and snow is expected in the area and travel could become hazardous.
As a reminder, USM’s Hattiesburg campus will close at noon today in anticipation of predicted winter weather. Students, please note that the Fresh Food Company will remain open through 8 p.m. Hillcrest will remain open until 6:30 p.m. Seymour’s will remain open until 4 p.m. The Century Park POD will be open until 11 p.m.
If the anticipated weather situation and hazardous road conditions occur, students, faculty and staff are advised to limit travel to emergency situations beginning in the early afternoon.
If an emergency situation requires travel by vehicle, the Mississippi Department of Transportation recommends the following:
- Slow down. Should winter weather conditions become present, “black ice” can form.
- Allow more space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
- Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
- Stay alert.
At this time, all USM operations are expected to resume as scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 17. University officials continue to monitor the weather system. USM emergency notices will be sent via Eagle Alert and posted to SouthernMiss.info.
