All University of Southern Mississippi campuses and locations will be closed until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 17, due to winter weather conditions that are expected to continue into the morning. Individuals who have been designated as essential personnel, including custodial personnel, should plan to report at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

USM officials are continuing to monitor the weather system, and any additional changes to Wednesday’s schedule will be communicated through Eagle Alert and posted to as soon as possible Wednesday morning.

The Fresh Food Company is expected to open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. All other food service operations are expected to open at 11 a.m., with the exception of Starbucks, which will open with Cook Library at noon.

Be advised that hazardous road conditions could occur. As a result, students, faculty and staff are advised to limit travel to emergency situations this evening and through Wednesday morning.

If an emergency situation requires travel by vehicle, the Mississippi Department of Transportation recommends the following:

- Slow down. Should winter weather conditions become present, “black ice” can form.
- Allow more space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
- Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
- Stay alert.
