Message from UPD: Friday Morning Security Test on the Hattiesburg Campus to Include Simulated Gunfire

The University of Southern Mississippi Police Department (UPD) and the School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Security, along with the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security and USM industry partners, will conduct testing Friday, Nov. 8, as part of a U.S. Department of Defense funded project being carried out on the Hattiesburg campus. Please be aware that this test will include the sounds of simulated gunfire and crowd noises in the stadium; however, there is no danger to students, faculty, or staff.

This test will include the firing of multiple simulated ammunition rounds (blanks) inside and directly around M.M. Roberts Stadium (“The Rock”). These tests will commence at 7 a.m. and last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. UPD personnel, as well as those with the Department of Athletics, will be onsite supervising the testing. The University is coordinating with other law enforcement agencies in the area, to ensure awareness of the tests.

Please call UPD at 601-266-4986 with questions or for additional information.
