Comments from Dr. Joe Paul, vice president for Student Affairs, during this morning's news conference:
"A great majority of campus is fine. All our residence halls are safe and secure. We've got a Mardi Gras holiday (Monday-Tuesday), so we were blessed that most students were away. Classes are not scheduled to resume until Wednesday. But we probably had between 500-800 students in our residence halls. We never lost power. The cafeteria is up and running, and everyone is fine.
"We did experience significant damage along our southerly border, our 'front door,' if you will. There is significant damage to at least six academic buildings, including notably our School of Music complex and our historic Ogletree Alumni House. We urge our students, faculty and staff to stay away from the campus today. We still have work to do to make sure the campus grounds are safe and secure. … All is well at Southern Miss. It could have been much, much worse."
